Job Overview:
We are seeking our next Middle School Principal who shares an unwavering belief that education is a civil right and that every child can learn. They must be fair and firm in their leadership and in all aspects of their work, with a lens on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. A strong, competent educator and a strong leader and people manager are desired. Reporting directly to the Director of Teaching and Learning, who is a district Executive Team member, the Middle School Principal is a member of the Senior Leadership Team and serves as the building administrator, leads the educational program for the FRCS Middle School, and represents the school to the community at large. The principal supervises and partners with the Assistant Principals, who supervise student discipline, attendance, activities, and records. The Assistant Principals also assist the principal in the daily operation of the school, and observe and evaluate a portion of the building staff. It is critical that the Principal has experience supervising individuals and teams, is exceptionally skilled at leading them, and can balance autonomy with accountability when managing others.
Job Responsibilities:
Instructional Leadership
- Serves as the instructional leader and drives teaching and learning aligned with best practices
- Manages daily school activities and personnel, including teachers and support staff
- Establishes class schedules and ensures they demonstrate a commitment to maximizing learning time in alignment with DESE requirements, and are ready and accurate each school year before students arrive
- Leads faculty to delivery of curriculum through age-, grade-, and culturally appropriate instructional strategies, serving the various learning styles and needs of FRCS students
- Supports implementation of MTSS by monitoring fidelity of implementation and working with culture and climate teams, including the guidance team, to identify and address barriers to implementation through regular teaming and problem-solving
- Collaborates with the Director of Teaching and Learning, the Curriculum Coordinator, the Director of Student Services, and other principals to ensure consistency and harmony in curriculum, instruction, and programming between schools.
- Facilitates the Instructional Leadership team, including supporting and directing the work of teacher leaders
- Oversees intervention programs and activities focused on closing the achievement gap
- Oversees student and family-focused social/emotional services and programs. Facilitates collaboration with adjustment counselors, guidance counselors, health, wellness, and disciplinary staff, and classroom staff to meet the social and emotional needs of all FRCS students.
- Stays abreast of processes related to 504 Plans and IEPs
- Collaborates with building staff and the Student Services Team to coordinate external services and programming, including DCF, community safety personnel, and first responders, to meet the needs of students and families
- Collaborates with the Director of Teaching and Learning, program coordinators, and instructional coaches to integrate character education, leadership, and community service-learning experiences into the educational program of the school
- Manages the building’s educational budget to focus resources on meeting the needs of our students, staff, and families
Staff Supervision and Hiring
- Leads in hiring for high-quality direct reports in partnership with the Human Resources Department
- Leads formal and informal teacher observations and professional goal plans; completes formal evaluations for direct reports with a focus on continuous growth and improvement
- Ensures that staff understand and follow FRCS policies and state requirements related to teaching and learning
- Mentors Assistant Principals and teachers directly and provides mentoring in instructional approaches, classroom management, character role modeling, and other resources
- Works in conjunction with the Curriculum Coordinator to provide or arrange for professional development and leadership opportunities that support specific teacher needs and professional goals
School Climate, Culture & Safety
- Establishes and coordinates security procedures for students, staff, and visitors; collaborates with behavior interventionists, the operations team,m and others
- Fosters communication and collaboration among staff, families, and students to support the school and district goals
- Oversees the development and organization of school-wide events, activities, and traditions that create a sense of identity and positive school culture within the building, and encourages active participation from all stakeholders
- Serves as an ambassador of the school by attending school and district events as well as communicating with families and the school community
- Supports Assistant Principals and discipline staff in addressing student discipline issues
- Elevates issues and challenges to supervisors in an effort to problem-solve and collaborate
- Engages stakeholders and always considers who is not at the table and should be included, including student/family voices
- Supports teachers in sharing ownership of student safety, learning, and accountability
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Teaching and Learning.
Minimum Qualifications- Required:
- Education: Hold a Master’s degree
- Middle school teaching or other educator experience
- Minimum of three (3) years of Teaching, Department Head, or Lead, or Assistant Principal or Principal experience, including providing supervision to teachers and staff
- SEI Endorsement or willing to earn within one year
- Knowledge of relevant MA DESE regulations and best practices
- Understanding of adolescent development and social-emotional needs
- Experience working with students & families of diverse ethnic backgrounds
- Demonstrable understanding of ABAR (anti-bias/anti-racist) practices and their place in education; someone who is active in their ABAR/DEI practice in this work; courageously interrupts inequity
- Comprehensive knowledge of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and evaluation
- Demonstrated experience in the instruction of students with varied learning styles and levels of proficiency
- Expert-level written and oral communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills and consistency in meeting deadlines
- Commitment to and experience with data-driven decision-making to inform instruction and continuous improvement
- Ability to assess grade-level needs to plan and lead teams of staff accordingly
- Strong interpersonal, coaching, and management skills with the ability to develop staff by offering constructive feedback through regular observations and evaluations
- Team builder with effective communication and project management skills who can maximize a team’s potential while diplomatically resolving conflicts
- Experience with and commitment to leadership and community service learning
- Financial acumen, enough to develop and manage budgets and allocate resources
- Pass CORI clearance and FBI background check
- Current authorization to work in the United States
- Candidates must have such authorization on their first day of employment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Current certification from the Massachusetts Department of Education as a School Principal/Assistant Principal 5-12
